15 artists create new work to mark London Underground's 150th birthday
Back in February, a sumptuous exhibition of vintage London Underground posters went on show at the London Transport Museum as part of the celebrations around the Tube’s 150th anniversary. But as well as raiding their archives for visual treats, the organisation has also commissioned 15 new posters from the likes of Lawrence Weiner, Sarah Lucas, Wolfgagng Tillmans and Gillian Wearing to commemorate this milestone. There has been some discussion around how well the new pieces actually work as posters, with our friends over at Creative Review pointing out that they may be more correctly viewed as prints rather than posters per se, but they’re still an interesting collection and it’s fascinating to see how some of our favourite artists have responded to this prestigious commission.
The posters will go on display next month at Gloucester Road, Southwark, St. James’s Park and London Bridge stations.
