Photographer Luke Overin champions the art of pigeon fancying

Date
7 January 2013

We’re no strangers to photographic projects that remind us of the weird nature of Britain like a cold smack in the face with a 99p flake, (see Taylor Wessing winner Jooney Woodward’s work) but sometimes one project comes along that captures a joyous corner of this little island with complete perfection.

Shot on 35m film, Luke’s interpretation of a pigeon fanciers’ convention is just the right side of gritty, with a substantial helping of wry, British humour. What’s nice about this project is how you can tell Luke has managed to befriend a lot of these pigeon folk, and has subsequently reaped otherwise inaccessible shots (see man with enviable pigeon tattoo). His clear respect for these people transforms what could have been a rather scathing project into something much more tender and true, and for that he should be praised.
