Illustrator Marina Pcheliakova’s happy characters follow a range of leisure pursuits
Russian illustrator Marina Pcheliakova is currently a student at Moscow State University of Printing Arts (MSUPA) and already she’s developing a pleasing style. Using a combination of analogue techniques like paint and pencil occasionally using digital tools to finish them, its Marina’s Journal illustrations where you can really see her eye for colour and narrative flourish.
Here, long-limbed characters with small faces go about their leisure pursuits like yoga, swimming, cycling and reading in a daze of plants and buildings. There’s a great sense of foreground and background in Marina’s work, allowing the illustrator to pack in her busy figures with less defined trees and objects to fill in the gaps in the landscape. In other projects she interprets novels visually in equally vibrant illustrations, where she adds more texture to her crowded scenes.
