Excellent work to be seen on Martin Nicolausson’s fresh looking site and shop. His style is thoughtfully composed, a real sum of textured parts, and it makes for a very nice looking portfolio; heavy on the communicative, cubistic happy, poster-like visuals. We thought a spring cleaned site is as good as any reason to catch up with the man himself…

Hello Martin! You’ve done a lot of work since we last featured you on the site, what’s your favourite project to date?

I really enjoy doing personal work. I’ve recently finished a project where the idea was to explore locked doors and what’s behind them. I’ve been fascinated by things that are closed off to me, areas that I can’t access but in my imagination. Although, I must say my favourite project is probably one that I haven’t done yet.

There’s some really great textures and colours that would suit a lot of processes, printing, digital, paint – how do you go about making your images?

My relationship with colour is a complicated one. I’ve always enjoyed working in black and white only, but judging by my more recent work that is obviously not the case lately. Still, I always start off working in grayscale. I use Illustrator and scanned textures basically. I don’t necessarily try to simulate any analogue ways of image making, what interests me is marrying them with digital techniques.

Where do you work and what are you doing right now?

I quite recently moved to London, where I work from my desk in a studio close to Broadway Market and London Fields. It has really nice people, a door reminiscent of a bank vault, and a terrace. Right now I’m doing several bigger and smaller projects for various magazines in the UK and Sweden. I’m also just about to start a book project and a branding project for a newly founded record label, which should be fun. I’m trying to keep busy, although it would be nice to have more time for barbecues in this crazy spring weather.
