Illustrator Matthew the Horse is back with more energetic and playful line drawings

Date
14 July 2016

Illustrator Matthew the Horse’s line drawings are chaotic and full of jumpy energy making them feel almost like newspaper cartoons in their short, instant delivery. His sketchy approach lends itself well to editorial commissions and since we last featured him in 2012, Matthew’s client list has grown considerably.

Creating work for The New York Times, The Economist and The Guardian and many other editorial big wigs, his work often has humorous undertones. Matthew builds his illustrations from extracting well-observed moments from the complexities of human behaviour and everyday life, making his work relatable. Lanky characters with simple features are contained in a few select colours that vary in tone and texture adding life to Matthew’s free-spirited linework. As well as his ongoing commercial projects, Matthew was recently part of the pop-up propaganda project, Remain Positive, where he and a group of other illustrators created posters that supported the pro-EU cause.
