Visual puns of famous names in droll music video shot in the style of Dutch masters

Date

Dutch still life paintings from the 17th Century were a great opportunity to show off a painter’s skill with their detailed realism. Music videos in the 21st Century on the other hand, like this one for electronic trio New Build, are perhaps better suited to showing off a sense of humour. This video for the London band, which includes Hot Chip members Al Doyle and Felix Martin and composer Tom Hopkins, plays off a series of visual puns evoking famous faces from Brad Pitt to Roald Dahl and is heavily inspired by old Dutch master paintings. Directed by George Wu with cinematography overseen by John Short, it is broken into four acts humorously bringing pop culture and history into the same frame.
