Oscars 2012 - Short Animation Nominations

Date
27 January 2012

All this week we’ve been pushing the trailers of BAFTA-nominated short animations your way and now, as the contentious list of contenders for the Academy Awards has been announced, here’s a rundown of those competing for Oscar glory.

First up, The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr Morris Lessmore – a hybrid of many animation techniques that takes on Buster Keaton via the Wizard of Oz on its way to the British Library. A “poignant, humorous allegory about the creative powers of a story,” say the makers, “old-fashioned and cutting-edge at the same time.”

Next up is Dimanche/Sunday a delightful animation loosely illustrated in muted tones. It follows a small boy under pressure of familial duty one Sunday and the story reflects his child-like wonder and astonishment when things are not as they seem.

La Luna is the product of an internal pitch at Pixar, the director Enrico Casarosa already being a signed up member of the Disney clan and champion of their short animation tradition. This is a fable about a boy who joins his father and grandfather on their nocturnal activities, the nature of their business being slowly revealed under the luna luminosity. See a clip here

The sophisticated colour scheme and dapper young English man set the early 1900s tone of Wild Life, it’s unusual, painterly animation and the carefree folly of it’s protagonist striking it out as something totally out of the ordinary.

And finally, Grant Orchard has gone done it again, we posted the trailer for A Morning Stroll on Monday in light of its BAFTA tip and now, most deservedly, it has been formally recognised by The Academy. Double win!
