Photography: Peter Nicholson's photos of upstate New York are a treat

Maybe it’s just because I’ve only ever been a couple of times and even then only really caught glimpses from the window of a Greyhound (not as cool as I’d hoped) as I left New York, but I’m completely obsessed with the USA. Compared to the UK it’s enormous, and each piece of it seems to have its own unique identity. Also, I’ve seen it in a whole bunch of films and it seems like there’s loads of exciting stuff happening all the time.

Photographer Peter Nicholson would have me believe otherwise though. He’s in the business of documenting the mundane, the everyday, the stuff everyone else just passes by. Even so his medium format images are an absolute dream for a US obsessive like me. These shots of Poughkeepsie, a city in upstate New York, in particular have everything I’m looking for in a documentary photograph; the clapboard houses, hazy blue skies and the vast expanse of the Hudson River snaking its way down to New York. Perhaps I need help.
