Andrew Lyman’s snaps create romantic stories for inanimate objects

My mum had this little tale that she used to tell me when I was a kid and we were walking down the street: if we saw two cars facing each other, she’d say they were having a cuddle and a kiss. It was quite a strange game, but always really sweet when we spotted two brightly coloured Volkswagen Beetles gazing into each other’s bubbly headlights.

It’s fun to create romantic narratives for inanimate objects, and Andrew Lyman does just that in his Alone Together series, where two balloons lovingly gravitate towards one another, and a pair of chimneys seem tragically close but forever out of reach. His photographs set out to conjure “feelings of intimacy and solitude through manufactured and found interactions,” and maybe after having a flick through these lo-fi snaps you’ll feel a little differently about only taking the salt shaker to the table this evening, and leaving heart-broken pepper behind.
