Photographer James Tolich depicts the daily life of an ageing mother and her daughter

Photographer James Tolich is back on our radar with a new series titled Mary and Nigre. Last year we wrote about the ease with which the photography captured boredom in all its beauty. Mary and Nigre builds on that languid, dreamlike sense of slowness found across James’ work.

Mary and Nigre tells the story of two generations of a family based in New Zealand. “This series is a simple glimpse into the daily life of Mary and Nigre, a mother and daughter living in Hillsborough, Auckland,” James tells It’s Nice That. “The images act as a window and the meaning behind them is left completely to the imagination of the viewer.”

The series, which is executed in the soft colours favoured by an ageing generation, lingers over touching details from the shared life of the mother and daughter, and densely carpeted rooms to china collections, endless cups of tea and frayed towels.
