Photography: Photographs of 80s malls, from filmmaker Michael Galinsky

Date
18 November 2013

These photos of 80s malls were found in the desk drawer of filmmaker Michael Galinsky when he was having a clear out. It’s a series of snaps he took in some American malls back in the glory days of the 80s, where families had matching mullets and people were wearing leg warmers without a hint of irony. Depressingly, it’s really only the fashion and hairstyles that have really changed, shopping centres are still really depressing boring places – you can’t even smoke in them any more, and you barely ever get arcade games. Thanks for finding these gems Michael, you’ve provided a flashback to the alarmingly similar days of yore, and there’s something kind of beautiful about that.

Want to know the best thing ever? Since these photos have spread out all over the internet, people have started recognising people in them! Read more about that here.

Michael’s book Malls Across America is available on his site.
