Introducing our new intern – meet Rebecca Fulleylove

Date
2 April 2012

We are delighted to welcome our newest intern, Rebecca Fulleylove, who arrived this morning bright-eyed (literally) and bushy-tailed (not literally). She has a passion for pylons and poetry, a creative writing degree and an unfulfilled ambition to be a baker. Read on to find out more about the latest addition to the team…

How do you explain what you do to your parents?

I say I write about things that I like. They seem quite happy with that.

Who do you look like?

I get Zooey Deschanel a lot, but really you could apply that to anyone that has a fringe, brown hair and big, blue eyes.

Did your education count?

Definitely. University taught me how to write basically. “Show not tell” is a mantra every writer should live by and if you can explain something in one word rather than 10, do that.

What’s the best mistake you have ever made?

That’s tricky. I guess a lot of people would say choosing career in writing or the arts is a mistake. It’s hard but I can’t imagine myself doing anything else.

When did you realise that this is what you were good at?

The other day I looked back at a poem I’d written in my first year at uni and I physically cringed at the mess of superfluous and over-dramatic words – so it’s nice to know that I don’t write that badly anymore. But I wouldn’t say I’m good yet, just on my way.

What rules do you live by?

A life rule I try to abide by is to try and understand why someone has done what they’ve done, even if you don’t agree with it. I think it broadens your perspective on the world massively. Also as I’m such a worrier, I think it’s really important to just relax and do nothing sometimes.

What makes your day?

It depends how I’m feeling. Sometimes being served by someone really friendly in Boots can make my week.

What did you want to be when you were growing up?

I wanted to be a baker but left that dream behind when people at school made fun of me – for some reason that wasn’t a cool career to aspire to. So now I just spend hours watching the Food Network while wiping my tears away with paper bags from Greggs.

What one thing would you like to be remembered by/for?

Being really good at whistling.

What’s your favourite combination?

Crisps and chocolate – it’s the sophisticated palette of birthday parties as a kid I can’t seem to shake.

What’s the funniest thing you have EVER seen?

Seeing my friend fall over at the bottom of an escalator at Lakeside Shopping Centre while people continued to walk over her. People falling over in general is hilarious, so You’ve Been Framed is one of my favourite shows as a result.
