I can’t remember the last time I used a pay phone, and in today’s society they are somewhat obsolete. However they are still everywhere, and in New York alone there are over 5,000 working pay phones. New Museum have used these relics of a bygone age to create Recalling 1993, a brilliant public art project which allows people to hear experiences of that turbulent time in the city’s history from citizens who lived through it. One guy claims he was possessed by the cannibal Daniel Rakowitz, and that a rat used to climb up onto his bed and hiss at him. Sounds like the time and place to be.

This is one of the most innovative ways of bringing history to life we have ever come across so if you happen to be in the city, pick up a pay phone and teleport back to the decade of double denim.
