Resolute yet playful designs for the If I Can't Dance groups’ compilation

Graphic designers Joris Kritis and Julie Peeters, with assistance from Julie Hénault, have created a playful look for the third compendium of texts from reading group If I Can’t Dance, I Don’t Want To Be Part Of Your Revolution. The limited colour palette and resolute approach brings fluency to a collection of texts from multiple sources, expressed in a variety of visual and linguistic traditions.

Rereading Appropriation assembles records from the four If I Can’t Dance sister groups which convened monthly in Amsterdam, New York, São Paulo and Toronto over the course of a year. It considers the entrenched behaviour of cultural institutions, the limitations of their collective memory and frame of reference, and the potential actions to be taken for a more representative art and cultural history. Joris and Julie’s approach leaves ample room for each of the texts to breathe and be understood by the reader’s audience, with brilliantly juxtaposed current and historical design references.
