Tender portraits of mothers and daughters by Valentina Vos and Francesca Jane Allen for Riposte

Date
8 June 2016

For the new issue of Riposte Valentina Vos and Francesca Jane Allen have captured three sets of mothers and daughters in a series of tender and beautiful shots. The images accompany three interviews with filmmaker and activist Naomi Shimada and her mother Nel Katherine Wartena, photographer Scarlett Carlos Clarke and her mother Lindsey Carlos Clarke, and models Reba & Jess Maybury with their mum Louisa Maybury. The portraits were taken at the home of the subjects and capture the affection, awkwardness and familiarity between the mothers and daughters as they half-pose in front of the camera.

The article celebrates motherhood and was conceived and edited by Nellie Eden and Claire Burman of creative agency BabyFace. The interviews, say Nellie and Claire, cover everything “from their mothers’ religious persuasions to their successes, failures, hopes and desires, these women find out what life was like for their mothers before they were born and discover how their mothers really feel about their lives today.”

A preview of the magazine, available for pre-order now, shows that it continues to go from strength to strength. Danielle Pender and art director Shaz Madani have commissioned Mat Maitland, Stephanie Wilson, Polly Brown , Sara Andreasson and Neil Bedford for the issue that covers everything from underwear to cycling teams.
