Russell Tyler applies paint to canvas like he might jam on toast. There’s the bright colour, shiny and sweet, sometimes with bits in it and, of course, the weird thing it does with the butter. But anyhow, the volume of colour and the mix of mediums make sense from far away as a jumble of joyous motifs and characters. Up close it’s another story, the image is diffusing, colours are running into each other creating a luscious landscape surface – a place I wouldn’t be surprised to see Neopolitan Shithead or Wolf Face (pictured) inhabiting.
