Selman Hoşgör pairs famous contemporaries like Picasso and Dali in a series of winking collages

Istanbul-based Selman Hoşgör is a resourceful illustrator, utilising hand-drawn typography and found images in his collages. The Central Saint Martins graduate also experiments with making some of his images move. For this black and white series, he pairs famous contemporaries with very different points of view from the worlds of art, literature and politics, science and popular culture in playful collages that wink. Figures like Andy Warhol and Jasper Johns, Virginia Woolf and James Joyce, John F. Kennedy and Fidel Castro sit side by side in cobbled-together compositions with letters from their names. Selman’s work often handles cultural figures from history, whether it’s a series looking at different art movements or famous writers, directors or inventors, he seems interested in offering a gamesome perspective on culture.
