Simone Massoni’s film noir-inspired illustrations for The New Yorker’s Crime Issue

Commissions from The New Yorker are definitely the stuff of dreams for both writers and illustrators alike. For the weekly’s recent Crime Issue, which hit newsstands in July, Italian illustrator Simone Massoni turned out all ten of these brilliant and beautiful illustrations playing on classic detective stories and New York film noir. Shadowed streets, suited gangsters, and crescent moons over city skylines all make for a distinctly recognisable and nostalgic take on the whodunit, albeit with modern twists like Sherlock Holmes with a smartphone. So good it’s criminal.
