Somesuch publishes its first print compendium of essays and short fiction

Somesuch Stories, a platform for essays, features and short fiction, has been publishing since the summer of 2014. An offshoot from London-based production company Somesuch, the site “came from a desire to create a space for proper storytelling, to use money made in advertising to give writers a space for longer pieces, anti click-bait”, says Somesuch Stories editor Suze Olbrich. They have featured writing on made-for-TV movies, climate change and twee advertising to name but a few and have aimed to “invite deep reading, online”.

Now, they are launching their first print issue and relaunching the magazine on it own url – having previously been linked to Somesuch’s main site. Suze describes their initial design inspiration as coming from “tiny pieces of many things including Strange Attractor, n+1, Granta and time spent in shops taking poor snaps of arresting things such as The New Fuck You: Adventures in Lesbian Reading". Art directed by Ditto, designed by Kate Jefferies and printed at Ditto Press, Somesuch Stories is at the scale of a large coat pocket with “illustrations constructed from the font… which will change for each issue and be reflected in [each of the story] icons”.

Issue one serves as an introduction to the Stories, an overview of the “contrasting collection of essays and short fiction that explores culture, nature, sex and society” which Somesuch publish. “I’ve worked with masses of great writers throughout, but when selecting pieces for this volume, it was crucial each was timeless and reflected us as an entity: sincere but not always serious; questioning, the familiar queered. And they hang together well”, says Suze.
