With so much great graphic design passing before our eyes online and in print each day, it’s sometimes easy to forget that beautiful compositions that are sometimes only paid the most fleeting attention are in fact the result of countless man-hours. That magazine cover that you flip casually past at the newsstand? A labour of love and the product of some serious design skills.

To remind us of the deliberation and attention to detail the best designers are renowned for, Studio New Work have published some of their grids to show how each seemingly effortless piece of layout is the result of laborious geometric construction and the careful manipulation of a few well-considered elements. While their stunning e-mailers for digital production studio Bespoke seem surprisingly simple, it’s that complex geometry going on behind-the-scenes that makes them exceptional.
