Just because the Documentary Spotlight category at SXSW threw up more than one promising vision of an artist-at-work, here’s a quick look at the Gregory Crewdson feature directed by Ben Shapiro. Brief Encounters follows Crewsdon as he goes to extreme and exacting lengths to produce one image that the title of the film refers to as “brief” and goes on to depict as a near impossibility. Employing cinematic devices through light and smoke and atmosphere he creates a new sort of fiction in photography. Haunting and beautiful these are “fantastical worlds that are seamlessly real” with as much power in one frame as an entire movie.
