It's Nice That Selfridges Talks Series – Words as Communication

Date
12 January 2012

Straight off the back of the success of our In Progress conference we’ve planned another series of talks offering food for thought. Coinciding with our Selfridges window commission, we’re bringing together an exciting and eclectic line-up of inspiring and darn-right interesting thinkers, writers, and designers to explore the ‘Words Words Words’ theme.

Kicking off the series next month is polymath James Bridle, copywriting strategists We All Need Words, and The Guardian journalist Paul Lewis (this event is sold out).

Join us next month in the immersive environment at the Ultralounge, Selfridges library for an evening of insightful talks exploring communication across journalism, branding and publishing. The speakers will in turn reveal how communication and language has evolved in its many guises (printed, verbal, digital) to cater for current trends, developments and the prevalence of new technologies.

Tweets are transforming journalism. Award-winning journalist Paul Lewis will explain how he used Twitter to report last year’s riots and conduct hard-hitting investigations, revealing how social media has changed the relationship journalists now have with their readers.

Artist, coder, writer and publisher James Bridle will attempt to tackle the complexities of online writing, new forms for a new age and all that this entails: notional spaces, network realism, ham, spam and salad (his words!). He will be considering writing as temporal far sight, as attempting to communicate, as fragmentation and reformation.

We All Need Words are on a mission to stop brand slop. They will celebrate the lost art of copywriting, and suggest new ways for brands to communicate (without the brand blah). So far they’ve been doing this for an impressive client list, includingThe School of Life, Molton Brown, ITV, Carluccio’s, Channel 4, Innocent and BACARDI.

We’ll be releasing details of the other talks nearer the time of each event, but to whet your appetite, the talk themes & speakers are revealed below:
