Teddy Fitzhugh: Have Fun Always

Date
29 February 2012

We all know that morning after feeling of scrolling through your pictures of the night before – a couple of random hotties, some imperfectly-assembled group shots and a lot of blurry excitement. Not so for 24-year-old photographer Teddy Fitzhugh who documents London’s ever-evolving music scene. “I’m not aiming to comment on a scene or a movement but more just the effects of music and how it makes people lose their inhibitions and go nuts,” he says and with great energy, an eye for composition and an ability to capture the very essence of a great gig, his new show at Protein’s east London space should be a cracker.

Despite his protestations that he just shoots what he sees, his fantastic photo-records of these nights is clearly born from a nuanced understanding of what makes them special.

“It feels like the most important thing in the world when youʼre there. The hype, the friendships, the odd-ball selection of people, the people who don’t give a f**k and are there to have the best time possible.”

And he loves that the London scene is so e effervescently exciting at the moment.

“Thatʼs what’s great right now – everyoneʼs switched on and knows their s**t and cares. We are hyped to see these guys play. Whether itʼs deserved hype or not, it doesn’t matter ʻcause we’re just excited to be there.”

The show opens at 18 Hewett Street on Thursday 8 March and runs until March 18.
