Product Design: Terrazzo Project make stunning products from an antiquated substance

Date

“Terrazzo is a composite material produced from layers of cement interspersed with chips of glass, marble, quartz, granite and other appropriate material. The invention of terrazzo can be traced to the 15th Century when Venetian artisans started to exploit construction residues to make highly resistant, low-cost surfaces principally used in flooring." Interested? Probably not. But the Terrazzo Project wants to change that.

Founded in 2011 by Swiss product designers Stéphane Halmaï-Voisard and Philippe-Albert Lefebvre, the Terrazzo Project aims to take this antiquated material and transform it into an aesthetically dazzling and highlyfunctional construction material, playing fast and loose with the medium to create striking products. At this year’s Milan Design Week they’ll be showing off their latest range, a selection of honeycomb reinforced panels with seemingly limitless fabrication potential. Based on these images, we’re very excited indeed.

You can see the Terrazzo Project at Spazio Orseo 16 from April 8 until April 13 2014.
