Mark Draisey: British Public Schools

This month we’re running a whole load of features all based around the theme of Back to School! Here’s some gems from this week…

– We interviewed Mark Draisey about his long-term project in which he photographed some of the oldest, most archaic public schools in Great Britain.

– We also spoke to Beano artist Kev F Sutherland about what it’s like to draw the Bash Street Kids and be a cartoonist for such an important magazine.

– We asked a bunch of important creatives why it’s important to go to art school.

– And Kyle Platts showed us some super-gory drawings he made when he was 12-years-old.

A big thank you to my friend Charlie Thorne who put this on Facebook earlier. Turns out there’s a whole series of this guy doing impressive acapella versions of pretty much everything over on YouTube. He’s particularly good at the Zelda songs, which is absolutely fine by me. #HusbandMaterial.

Rob Alderson

Last night I ended up re-watching this Culture Show special about Jeremy Deller which was released back in 2012 to coincide with his major exhibition at London’s Hayward Gallery. It’s a great portrait of Deller himself, his work, his collaborators and even his parents with some cracking insights and anecdotes. Tenner says you seek out some Depeche Mode afterwards…

So the Great British Bake Off is over now, boo hoo. BUT while I get over the lack of sponge towers and choux garlands in my life, Youtube is easing the pain by allowing me to re-watch not just this series of GBBO but also every other series (albeit in 3 minute intervals). This had been enough for me but then I stumbled upon THIS parody that uses Taylor Swift’s catchy tune Shake It Off and slices it up Bake Off style. It may have needed a little more proving (boom boom) before getting aired, but it’s wonderfully fun and nice and says so much about the love that GBBO has whipped up in all of us.
