The Weekender: Crash bang whallop it's our weird and wonderful weekend supplement, The Weekender

Date
14 February 2014

I went on a quest to try and find the worst date story possible as a kind of mildly rebellious, two fingers up to the whole Valentine’s Day thing. A lot of the stories (mostly found on Reddit) were just really sad, or involved some sort of angry, weeping venereal disease. Some though were true gold. Take it over DrPepperTasteGood, you poor, poor man:

“The time my buddy at work set me up on a blind date pretty soon after I had gotten out of a long relationship. He didn’t know me very well, but his cousin was looking to get back in the game after being with some douche bag for a while. Well I go to the restaurant and my ex is waiting for me. I sat down and tried to figure out if it was a joke or not. It was not. Just terrible luck.”

French feminism film that broke the internet this week

Simple, beautifully shot and it sticks with you for days after watching it. Bravo!

Amazing hand drawn typeface that resembles Nokia’s Snake

Well, it’s not meant to, but we think it does.

Michel Gondry is BACK!

He’s handsome, he’s French, he’s a livin legend, and he’s done the new Metronomy video. YES!

Don’t try this at home…

Well you could, if you had a MASSIVE balloon and you put all mum’s ornaments away.

1000 incredible hair sculptures

No it’s not a hairstyle catalogue made for Ascot 2012, it’s a series of photos of afro hairstyles turned into sculptures.

Ever wanted to go to the world’s largest sex convention?

Me neither, but photographer Cait Opperman did and these are the magnificent results.

Just as no one likes a smug couple on Valentine’s Day, no one wants a down-in-the-mouth “poor me, poor me, pour me another!” single person either. We’ve all got to live together today folks, and what better way to help it all run smoothly than two novelty playlists? Our mixtapes this week have been decided by committee, with the whole of the It’s Nice That Studio and Twittersphere submitting songs to go on two different mixes, the first being #Couples, the second being #Singles. Which is better? You decide. For us the singles one has got a certain je ne sais quoi, but maybe that’s because it features a song entitled Red Right Hand.

This week’s Things

This week’s Things include the latest offering from Pat Bradbury, a project that began life at London Design Festival, a zine dedicated to Tinder and all who spend their free time scrolling idly through it, the latest brilliant issue of Offlife and a publication about all the the excellent creative work made by Sweden-based studio PJADAD.

“With Collate we set out to explore the possibilities of digital collaboration by inviting visitors to create the pages printed in this publication,” the creators explain, and it’s only fair to say that they’ve done so admirably. Started at the London Design Festival 2013 at the V&A Museum, visitors were invited to participate in the making of the book by designing up their own spreads in an interactive installation. The designs that made it into the book were voted for by the general public, and printed and bound with an excellent dose of design know-how, along with an essay about Thomas Edison, Game of Thrones and a half-naked train ride by our very own Rob Alderson! A brilliant project to see brought to fruition.

Date Publications set over their excellent zine, Life Goes On, to commemorate the occasion. A funny, cutting and all too familiar tribute to Tinder, it’s full of all the usual trials and tribulations that come with dating lots of weird men, plus a submissions forms for all lads and ladies to submit their experiences about weird girls. Great!

We had the pleasure of enjoying Pat’s company for a bit earlier on this week, and he went as far as to dish out some prints of his newest work for us! New Shapes plays on the synaesthete in all of us with a number of shapes whose names weirdly match them. Fun.

PJADAD: Selected Work 2008-2013

PJADAD, or Petter Johansson Art Direction and Design, is a design studio based in Stockholm and Malmö. This nice wee publication is a celebration of the wide-ranging work they have created over the pas five years, and a “preview of what we will be doing for the next five,” which seems to us like an excellent excuse to show off their work, which includes a transparent pod you can sit inside, loads of lovely identities and a bunch of spaces to boot.

Offlife, a street press comic magazine, has two un-ignorable things going for it: one being that it is 100% FREE (woo!) and the second that it is chockablock full of the best indie talent of today, providing an excellent stepping stone for people to get their work recognised.
