The Weekender: Shut up and listen, it's our strange and beautiful weekend supplement

Date
25 April 2014

You know how eating a pile of fish and chips makes you feel like if someone pushed you over and you fell on a puddle you’d drown? Or how watching scary films makes you feel like you can’t go upstairs? Or gossiping behind someone’s back is really mean but really fun? Well, the Weekender is there to make you feel warm. Not nice warm, uneasy warm. The warm you feel when you run for the bus in a polyester turtleneck, or the warm you feel when you arrive on said bus and sit on a seat to find yourself asking “Is this heated?”

Have a great weekend.

Panda Conservation Scientists

James Cartwright -

Working in art and design occasionally makes you wonder whether what you’re doing with your life is truly meaningful. You don’t save lives like a doctor, manage the state of the nation like a civil servant or further the advancement of our planet and the human race like scientists do. But then you see pictures of conservation scientists dressed up in panda suits and realise that everyone’s just larking around, so you probably shouldn’t worry too much about anything really.

The Small House Movement

Maisie Skidmore -

I was reading an article about “the effect that rising house prices are having on London’s cultural centres” on i-D this week, which led me to an amazing discovery; the Small House Movement. It turns out that, above and beyond simply being skint all the time, a whole architectural and social movement has taken up in response to the sprawling homes cropping up for extortionate prices across the United States. Advocating living simply in small homes, the Small House Society, and semi-linked “Tiny House Blog”:http://tinyhouseblog.com/ have a solution to every problem you could ever possibly have on downsizing to a room that’s a grand total of 200 odd foot square, from building a bathroom in a 2ft x 3ft space, to converting houseboats. Cool stuff!

If you’re not venturing to a party in east London this weekend fear not! You can still get your hit of pretentious art scenesters, cynical media executives and unfriendly, aggressive passers-by from this truly hilarious collection of monologues from Chris Morris’ Blue Jam radio series.

This is some footage of The Beatles hanging around in an apartment, presumably before they go onstage or on TV or something as they’re doing things like cleaning out their ears and putting cameras in their pockets. I spend most of my spare time looking at this sort of thing, but this one I HAVE to share. Watch until the end (it’s only 44 seconds long) and keep watching Ringo. Dreams = come true.
