The Weekender — spoofs, a new take on Baby Got Back and Mo Farah gets Tumblr'd
Hang out the bunting and uncork the cava (I’m not made of money)– we’re celebrating! It’s one year since The Weekender first came into the world and it’s fair to say we’ve had 12 months of super-fun silliness. It’s been a joy and an honour filling your Friday afternoons with the finest stuff and nonsense we come across and we hope you’ve enjoyed it too. Three cheers for bizarre videos, ridiculous Tumblrs and crazy-good creative work! Let’s make some magic, birthday style…
Best of the site
This week we were bowled over by Jack Hughes’ super-stylish illustrations and by George Butler’s very poignant scenes of a Syrian town in crisis, and we applauded Wieden + Kennedy for this spot-on spoof ad…
Best of Best of the Web
Great stuff from Spitalfields Life and their interview with a collector of dog photography, HUH magazine did an excellent comparison on the costs of famous logos and Aesthetica ran a really good review of this year’s dOCUMENTA.
Best of the Rest
Elsewhere we love this Max Lamb crockery, were perplexed by some of the artist-designed holes on this crazy golf course and were overjoyed that someone had made the fake books from Wes Anderson’s The Royal Tennenbaums a reality.
Tweet of the week
“has anybody ever been named onion?”
“the most comfortable hat”
“canister of olympic pool water for gift”
“a mitt romney limerick please”
I have a feeling I’m late to the party on this but as it’s had me weeping with laughter this week thought I was duty-bound to share in case you too are unitiated. The premise is that the owner of @Old Man Search posts his 82-year-old dad’s Google searches. There’s questions as to the veracity of it but my goodness it’s hilarious..
Filmic celebration of large bottoms of the week
Baby Got Back stitched together from nearly 300 movie clips. Genius.
Celebrating our Olympics heros gesture of the week
Last weekend the UK stood on its feet and cheered as Mo Farah added the 5,000 metre gold medal to his earlier 10,000m triumph. It was an heroic performance, a crowning athletic glory for the games and an important socio-cultural gesture as this Somalian refugee ran into the hearts of even the least accepting middle Englanders. So what was the first thing someone did to mark this historic achievement? Make a funny Photoshop Tumblr of course…
Humanity-faith restoration article of the week
If you ever feel your belief in the inherent goodness of fellow humans shaken, then remember Rick van Beek. The keen traithlete competes carrying his 13-year-old daughter Maddy – who suffers from cerebral palsy – because she likes the experience and he feels it brings them closer together. A life-affirming story if ever there was one.
GIFs of the week
Here’s a simple sum: GIFs + wildly popular Amercian sitcom = excellence. Friends just got Giffed and it’s amaaaaaaaazing (also if you’re a fan you’ll appreciate these original descriptions of the characters which surfaced this week). Could we BE enjoying this more?
Easy question of the week
Want to see a dog doing Parkour?
Don’t forget to take a party bag before you leave (one each, strictly no exceptions).
