The Weekender – rich cats, creepy muppets and some iPhone suckers

Date
14 September 2012

The Weekender is a big believer in karma. Just the other day a woman stopped me in the street and asked me for a pound to help her get home. Of course I gave her one, at which point she spat in my face and ran off into a pub. Karma eh? Have I got this right? Bring on the nonsense!

Best of the site

This week we enjoyed the weird and wonderful ideas of designer Dominic Wilcox, we were smitten by Elena Xausa’s illustrations and we spent a lot of time leaning back and removing our glasses as we let Blommers & Schumm’s new work mess with our minds.

Best of Best of the Web

Many fine tributes around for Bill Moggridge this week in particular Design Museum Director Deyan Sudjic’s Guardian piece, we enjoyed learning about what it’s like to do the fictional graphic design for a BBC comedy and we felt old looking at this collection of abandoned movie stores in the USA.

Best of the Rest

Design Observer had a great piece on John Stezacker, we saw what famous icons look like without gloss (if you’ve ever seen a celebrity in real life these will strike a chord) and we got a photo tour round a Mexican ghost mask making factory.

Tweet of the week

“If I could be any person, living or dead, I’d definitely be a living person.”
You can’t argue with @sixthformpoet’s logic but must be conversation killer at dinner parties.

iPhone stunt of the week

So the world (ok techy Twitter users) were all in a spin this week with the unveiling of the new iPhone5 but how far are we all just hypnotised by the Apple promise now? US talk show host Jimmy Kimmel sent a team out t show punters the new phone and they were duly wowed by its new shape, feel and features. Oh, except it was actually the exisiting phone people – SOME OF WHOM OWN IT – were cooing over.

Feline class war of the week

You may remember the vulgar/compelling Rich Kids of Instagram Tumblr that did the rounds a few weeks ago. Well get ready for the Rich Cats of Instagram. Meow indeed!

Tree of the Week

Nature is cool. The human mind is cool. So when they come together there’s no limit to the fantastic possibilities, the creative dreams humankind can make reality. We can, and will make this world a better place. How shall we start I hear you ask? Why a fruit salad tree of course!

Introductions of the week

At certain kinds of events, the organisers believe that the room is looking to them to lubricate the cogs of social interraction. But simple name tags are no longer enough, now Icebreaker tags are all the rage with attendees filling in a quirky fact or thought so as to crack the unbearable utter silence. Does it work? Maybe. Is it good that someone’s collated them on a Tumblr? You bet. Are some people VERY weird? See for yourself..

Why is this so creepy question of the week?

Why? Why? Muppets are nice. Human eyes are nice. But together? Aaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrgggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

Hang on I just read about karma. I had it completely wrong. My belief system is shattered. Have a lovely weekend!
