The Weekender – with a Youtube fun, dragons and a great impression of a nuclear bomb

Date
14 December 2012

The end of the week is a cause for celebration for most of us, but spare a thought for those who help make our weekends extra special. I’m talking about the bar staff, the taxi drivers, and cheery kebab vendors who help our end of week plans come to fruition. So if you’re heading out tonight maybe on a Christmas do (Martin from accounts was TOTALLY checking you out by the way) then give them a smile and help brighten up their weekend too. This is for them…

Best of the site

This week we loved Tatabi Studio’s identity for kids’ food brand Muyum, we were super impressed by a clever ad campaign turning iconic photos into “selfies’ and we couldn’t get enough of this excellent Youtube hack

Best of Best of The Web

There were no signs of anyone winding down for the festive season with lots of great content around this week, including this video interview with Quentin Blake on the BBC. a good typography piece on Design Taxi and this strange story about a new logo for a US university and a MASSIVE row about it.

Best of the Rest

Jason Bruges has created a great new interactive installation for Great Ormond Street Hospital as featured on The Guardian, Design Observer had a really good piece on Venice and this bridge in Sarajevo tickled us all sorts of pink.

Tweet of the Week

“Ice Ice Surrey. Alright stop, Collaborate and listen, Ice is back and these roads are glistening…”

An honourable mention for Solihull Police this week but it was their counterparts @SurreyPolice who won us over with this excellent Vanilla Ice inspired weather warning.

Nuclear explosion impression of the week

If you haven’t come across Stephen Colbert before then he’s a bit of genius as proved here where he assails an unsuspecting interviewee with a mesmerisingly awkward impression of a nuclear attack. It goes on for AGES!

Chancer of the week

Fair play to this guy who challenged an exorbitant bill at a strip club on the grounds that he was “served too many drinks.” Suffice to say it didn’t work.

Hothead of the week

Sometimes The Weekender feels dutybound to go into forensic detail to flag up just how bizarre a certain story is, but on other occasions a simple headline will do. And so in that spirit we give you Man burns his head after mistaking iron for phone. It’s exactly how it sounds.

Dragon issue of the week

If you had a bit of disposable income and maybe some time to kill what would you do? Order a delicious takeaway? Bid for something flippant on ebay? Or place an advert in a newspaper asking people to “Lure away a green dragon? You know where we’re going with this don’t you…

Diminutive primate of the week

A story about a monkey found wandering round IKEA in Toronto is obviously going to get quite a lot of attention. Now imagine said monkey is wearing a coat. Now imagine said monkey is wearing a “posh winter coat.” There is literally nothing about this story that isn’t perfect, particularly the phrase “diminutive primate” in the second paragraph.

Go on, give him a grin!
