The Weekender's at the bar, serving up springboks, jacuzzis and business cards

Date

Hey little boy, watcha got there? Kind sir it’s The Weekender I’ve found. Did you find it in the sandy ground? No, I found it strapped onto the back of a daily art and culture website, lurking. Oh. What does it do? I’m not sure yet, but it seems to enjoy regaling people with tales of the week that was, and making them laugh in a guilty way. Not a full-blown guttural laugh, but a kind of embarrassed, knowing snigger. Sounds good yeah? YEAH! YEEAAAAAAHHHHH!

Best of the Site

This week we’ve been swamped with variety from the likes of Henrik Franklin and his beautiful illustrations of books, immersed ourselves in the rock ‘n’ roll world of Juergen Teller for his latest show at the ICA and enjoyed some seriously classy stationery with fashion sensibilities from Yarra Jones and Sarah Thorne.

Best of Best of the Web

Our thanks go out to The New Yorker for their thoughtful discussion of the book of the future, Design Taxi for showing us this absurdly detailed hand-drawn map, created over the course of seven busy years, and Design Observer for their coverage of this unique exhibition that catalogues 100 years of human history through a collection of personal diaries.

Best of the rest

Creative Review gave us a solid insight into Michael Bierut and team’s recent redesign of America’s Billboard magazine, booooooom showed us a remarkable modular kit of beautifully crafted outdoor tools and Marcus Fairs launched his new Opinion column over on Dezeen.

Tweet of the week

“These days, when something is criticised as being “pretentious”, I know I’ll almost certainly probably find it interesting & worth my time."

Yeah good on you @AnneBillson, that’s how The Weekender feels every day. Although The Weekender is outlandishly pretentious.

Soundbite of the week

We all know there’s a certain kind of person out there that works within a certain type of industry whose reliance on phrases like “blue-sky thinking” and requesting 1000% (thats one thousand) out of their team is inexcusable, provoking a maddening rage within your very soul, to the point that you’d like to lynch them with their own tie and tell them to shove their blue sky up their….

Alternatively you could just set up a tumblr to vent your frustration at this meaningless word-garbage. Repeat after me: “To us, the unicorn symbolises the never-ending quest for digital mastery.”

Humbling printed matter of the week

Go to your wallet and remove the tatty little pile of business cards that you keep just in case you’re at a networking event or a wife-swapping party. Pathetic aren’t they. What does your job title even mean? Seriously, who came up with that? Never mind, you can console yourself with these excellent specimens from the great and the good of world history instead. I bet Einstein’s business cards never looked as shabby as yours.

Animal celebration of the week

Listen up everyone, the springbok is happier than you will ever be, and that’s ok, you need to get used to that. As if a human could ever celebrate life like this. Majestic!

Luxury purchase of the week

We’re about to hit the third dip in the global recession. Bummer eh? I tell you what you need to take your mind off it though, a luxury joystick-controlled boat that’s also a giant floating hot tub. Feel your money worries easing away? Yeah you do!

Reason not to carry a handgun of the week

Which is better, a handgun or a penis? In an ideal world you’d never to have to make a choice between the two, but this poor guy did.

Now back to it you scamps! Come on, you’ve probably got a spreadsheet to finish or something.
