Things

Things this week comes in five unusual flavours: exhibition, magazine, dog, greetings card and zombie. Sadly zombie is mouldy and dog left hairs in my mouth; thank God there’s three more to choose from. Yay Things!

A Quick Perspective of the Future Theo Simpson and Ben Mclaughlin

First up this week a pleasantly spartan invitation to a retrospective at Sheffield’s Site Gallery featuring the printed works of Theo Simpson and Ben Maclaughlin. Sadly we couldn’t make it but the invite and accompanying poster were so beautifully lithographed we had to take the opportunity to feature it somehow. Who can resist the charms of a huge blue pylon?

Issue Two New Planes Public Press

This little gem of a publication travelled half-way round the world to be with us, and we’re glad it survived the journey. Australian magazine New Planes Public Press professes to “overlap interests and blur boundaries creating a nodal point between ideas – of generations, sub-cultures and creative practices – and popular consciousness.” Quite a tall order, but it rises to the challenge nicely with a plethora of content ranging from spiritual time-travel to a helpful guide on park etiquette, not to mention some lovely illustration.

Best In Show Dog Top Trumps

With the prevalence of cute, animal-related Youtube clips it’s easy to think of dogs simply as placid internet-entertainers. But back in the day they entertained us in a different way; preening and posturing at preposterous dog shows. In the spirit of this golden age of canine nonsense, Laurence King has provided top trump style cards for us to enjoy the thrill of the parade ring in our own homes.

Greetings Cards Mark Pawson

The ever-productive Mr Mark Pawson has delighted us once again with this new set of greetings cards. Lovingly Gocco-printed onto a variety of different card stocks they feature both charmingly rendered animals and some eco-friendly mantras. All available from his website (a place that also has the prestigious honour of being the only UK stockist of seminal clipart zine Crap Hound). Nice!

Daybreak Brian Ralph

When you’re the one-armed survivor of a zombie apocalypse things can be pretty tough. But when you stumble across a kindred spirit things should start to look up right? Wrong actually, things remain tough. And then get tougher. A tip-top piece of graphic brilliance from narrative genius Brian Ralph, featuring at least 20 severed heads and more corpses than you can shake a stick at – although given the circumstances you should probably arm yourself with something heavier than a stick.
