Things

Date
17 December 2011

As it’s the last Things of the year, we had a little celebration and went CRAZY with the imagery, detaching the camera from the tripod and going roving with the lens. The results, as you can see, are spectacular – full-bleed images, a plethora of crazy angles, and as ever, totally badical (bad-ass + radical) content from the lovely people that send us post. Until next year dear friends!

Naked Lunch Screenprint Joseph Vass

This voluminous screenprint from Kingston illustrator Joseph Vass is an absolute pleasure to behold. We’re pretty partial to a bit of Burroughs, dead keen on wildlife, and we really love a good fade. Three boxes firmly ticked Mr Vass – thanking you sir.

O.K Periodicals: #7 The Thriller Issue

Publishers take note: inserting musical gadgetry into your printed matter WILL draw attention to it. We were thumbing through The Thriller Issue yesterday only to be alarmed by a seriously high-pitched version of Michael Jackson’s own Thriller blaring from the centre-fold. The content was interesting enough, but the musical novelty secured this little volume’s place in Things. Tuneful trickery aside O.K Periodicals’ seventh issue is packed full of great art, design, photography and illustration not to mention some terrific fiction. Thrilling!

Computer Arts Collection: Graphic Design

Those of you familiar with Computer Arts Magazine will know that its a hotbed of informative articles, enlightening interviews and an invaluable resource of information for anyone seeking to polish their digital skills – there’s always someone out there who’s better at Photoshop than you. Having consistently provided a comprehensive view of the modern creative industries it’s perhaps unsurprising that the Computer Arts team have put together six in-depth volumes exploring graphic design, typography, illustration, branding, photography and advertising. The Graphic Design issue is out now and it’s REALLY nice, including features on design greats; Brody, Sagmeister and Hyland.

Graphic Design: Now In Production Walker Art Center

More graphic design goodness, this time from the Walker Art Center, in the form of a catalogue from their recent Graphic Design: Now in Production show. Sadly we had neither the time, nor the means to get over to Minneapolis and check it out in the flesh, but this catalogue lets us feel as if we might have done. It’s an enormously comprehensive volume containing everything from warship camouflage to the title sequence of HBOs Game of Thrones. Graphic design is eveywhere!

Random Spectacular #1

It wouldn’t be Christmas without some good old-fashioned charity and Random Spectacular is the yuletide do-gooder in this week’s Things. All the profits from this issue will be donated to Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centres and we’re confident those profits will be tidy given the quality of work on display. Each page is awash with richly illustrated content from the likes of Jon McNaught, Rob Ryan and the legendary Peter Green accompanying some terrific reportage and fiction writing. A great project for a great cause.
