POW! Things hits us right in the kisser this week with greif, notebooks and a soundsystem

Date
17 November 2012

“Let us read, and let us dance; these two amusements will never do any harm to the world.” Yeah maybe Voltaire had a point, but I’m sure if he’d known about Things and the lovelies who send us them, he’d have added: “Let us send tonnes of post” to that list. So join us on our jolly trolley stacked high with the Things that blew our socks off.

Pulse Films/Ruvan: Shut up and Play the Hits – The Very Loud Ending of LCD SOUNDSYSTEM

If you’re like me, you would have crawled over molten rock wearing nothing but metal pants to see LCD Soundsystem’s curtain call. Unfortunately, this option wasn’t available to anybody and many didn’t get to say their goodbyes to a band that has spoken to a generation. Luckily Pulse Films were capturing every moment, documenting the band’s epic final gig alongside their photographer Ruvan so we all can rave it up one last time. The It’s Nice That office has never been so pleased to dust off those dancing clogs, get up on the desks and have it large in honour of James Murphy and the band that makes you want to dance yourself clean.

Now then ladies and gents, we’re getting our geek on with this fantastic scientific fusion of typographic loveliness. Based on a quotation from the 1964 Feynman Lectures on Physics, A Poet Once Said… explores ideas and learning, replicating Feynman’s own style of teaching with its concrete poetry-styled typography and abstract illustrations. Throughout the book, footnotes are to be found that further explain each illustrated quote, offering philosophical insights and the contextual significance of the text. The project was inspired by a desire to break out of a graphic design world that solely aims to sell products. Maggie Chok took the decision to align herself “with designers and thinkers who are interested in illuminating rich concepts and ideas in a way that elicits meaning, appreciation, and awe on part of the viewer.” Mission accomplished.

And this is the only place to squiggle them out with your weapon of choice. Postalco have teamed up with Sunspel to produce a pad of elegant beauty; the kind of product you almost feel like you have to dress up around to impress it. Seriously, it’s that gorgeous!

Der Greif

You remember those smug kids at school who returned after the Christmas holidays with more gismos and gadgets than James Bond? I wasn’t one of them, but Things this week has spoiled us with this SUPERB magazine designed for people with an affinity for photography and literature. Der Greif is a print-magazine, online-platform and joint project for and with photographers and authors from all over the world. Not only is this magazine completely advert-free, its choc-a-block with inviting content designed in a clean, fresh format. This magazine is one to look out for – a real winner that seriously explores with depth the “absurd glamour in our perfectly-polished environments.”

Bryce Wilner: Both Sides in Moderation

You know us well enough now to understand that we LOVE ZINES! And Both Sides in Moderation doesn’t disappoint with its warmed images of plants and vegetal life. The zine was published in collaboration with a new Riso printshop and publishing house over in Chicago called Working Knowledge, an imprint we’re looking forward to seeing much more of.
