Little Joe: #4

Little Joe magazine’s coat pocket tuck-able format and strong blue and black design make it a treat to hold. The content, too, is a real treat to behold. Issue #4 of the “magazine about queers and cinema, mostly” includes features on and interviews with queer underground filmmakers, transgender punk icons, collectors, activists and the less easily classifiable. There’s also a (very graphic) pull-out comic by Mike Kucher extracted from 1981’s Gay Heartthrobs – No.3 featuring gladiatorial adventures with massive swords. Made with passion, commitment and expertise, Little Joe is an enlightening delight.

Davi Campos: Nice to Meet U

“This is the story about a boy, born in Brazil, who lived in Portugal. Now moving to London. He loves illustration, graffiti and graphic design.” So says the back of Davi Campos’s charming two colour risograph zine, Nice to Meet U. Inside, each silent page builds a picture of Davi’s life: dropped as a bundled baby from a stork, disappearing into a massive ABC, surfing, spray painting, playing basketball, pouring graphic design into his head and ending up at Big Ben. If only all introductions could be this sweet.

Otaku Magazine: Sapporo Edition

Opening up Otuka Magazine is like walking into a comics con. There’s tons of stuff (some awful, some brilliant), it’s quite hard to understand and it’s all a bit overwhelming. With a broad range of illustration, fashion and art features all related to manga and cosplay, there’s some genuinely interesting finds. It was the Dracula poster and the internal anatomy of Barbie, intestines and all, that had me sold.

Making Good calendar, wall planner, tags

It’s a bit too late for calendars, but as these came all the way from Sydney we’ll make an exception. What’s so good about these paper products is the simplicity, so there’ll be no overcomplicating here. It’s just clear, useful, nice looking stuff.

Tane Williams: Stuff

Stuff is a self promo zine from illustrator Tane Williams. It’s green and red and has apple cores, a mauled hand, patterned nudity and a medieval king eying a pot plant. In other words, it’s fun. Plus the cover’s a sick-making optical illusion.
