Let's see what the letterbox has spewed out this week! It's time for Things

Date
18 July 2014

Another week, another tidalwave of amazing stuff that comes flying through our letterbox faster than we can spring up from our chairs to catch it. And another slight exaggeration to describe how popular we think we are. Regardless, here’s some more cool stuff we’ve been sent this week, including books, totes, zines and books!

Of the Afternoon: Issue #2

Based in manchester, Of the Afternoon is a photography publication and a terribly nice one at that. The first half of the magazine focuses on sharing the work featured in the creators’ regular London exhibitions, while the second half based around interviews with contemporary imager-makers. This one deserves a solid flick through with a coffee on a Sunday afternoon.

Fabrica: Drone

“We have entered the age of the drone beyond warfare,” the press release accompanying Fabrica’s new book, DRONE: Speculative Fictions in the Age of the Drone reads. “Extending human capabilities to new horizons, unmanned aerial vehicle technology will increasingly shape our environment in relation to voyeurism, social media, mass surveillance and terrorism.” Their response comes in the form of the book, which aims to “examine how unmanned aerial vehicle technology might influence our behaviour and our relationship to physical space.” Sure, it sounds like something out of a contemporary sci-fi film, but the issues Fabrica are looking at are real ones, which makes this little publication actually a very important one, as well as being very well designed.

Alejandro Chaskielberg: La Creciente

When incredibly well established photographer Martin Parr writes the introduction to your book, you know you’ve got great things cued up for you, but when he gives a review as excited and as passionate as this one, it steps up to another level. Martin exclaims: “On one level, his [Alejandro Chaskielberg’s] work documents a rural community living on the banks of the Paraná river delta. but there is so much more to it than that. All taken during the full moon, his pictures are a virtuoso exploration of how flash, torches moonlight and posed portraits all fuse together in a seamless manner Chaskielberg has combined subject and methodology so convincingly that you hardly notice the line between them.”

This is one excellent example of when the number of contributors to a comic zine is exactly proportionate to how brilliant it is; Steak Night has six, and it’s full to the brim of first-rate illustration, witty narrative, poignant storytelling and even a dash of colour.
