This scene is made of paper. Instead of visiting a landscape, photographer Thomas Demand creates one and, when he is finished with his constructed reality, he destroys it – further “complicating the relationship” between reproductions and originals. The spaces are devoid of people and explore the possibilities of architectural models to the fullest: “Architecture has always been in the centre of my attention,” he says, “it deals with utopias and ideas of a somehow better future.” Demand is currently exhibiting in Lifelike, at the Walker Arts Centre and at the Nottingham Contemporary with the solo Model Studies.
