Super slick glossy internet art is really good and all that, but some of the most exciting creative work bouncing around at the moment seems to be the lo-fi, cut and stuck work that could almost have been made on microsoft paint. It has that air of “selloptaped up on your grandma’s fridge” that sharp, shiny highly-computerised work just doesn’t seem to share. And when it comes to cut and stuck, Thomas Slater is the king.

This new work Gym Buddy was commissioned by Mosaic Magazine, an online publication by the Wellcome Trust that covers a myriad of tricky topics, from science and medicine to health and society. given the complex and sometimes dry subject matter, however, they’re commissioning no end of exciting creative talent to jazz up those word pieces we wrote about Tom Gauld’s illustrated accompaniment to piece about Alzheimer’s not so long ago, and they have works by Brea Souders, Gemma Tickle and Kyle Bean up their sleeve too. There’s never been a better time to learn about biology.
