Tim Schutsky's photography portfolio of personality
Within photography portfolios a sense of style is key. It is necessary for the photographer to document and display an image appropriately, but additionally speak of the personality behind the lens. This is a characteristic Brooklyn-based photographer Tim Schutsky defines in his broad yet considered work.
Born in Philadelphia, Tim relocated to New York to study at The School of Visual Arts, and currently spends time working as an editorial photographer, making his own work in his studio, and travelling for projects. Tim often collaborates with other directors and photographers, resulting in a body of work differentiating in subject matter. Whether it be still life or beguiling portraits, both tell a story in a singular image. The photographers use of textured backgrounds within his still life pieces advance the subject matter. From crushed velvet to highlight the structure of a milk carton, or a matte backdrop elevating even the glossy surface of a toilet.
Tim’s inspiration stems from the “standardised roles of masculinity, what is culturally inherited and also what I have been passed down by my father. The idea of one’s responsibilities becoming too much and wanting to abandon them interests me.” This is an inspiration realised in the photographers portrait shots of masculine men who gaze off camera, looking a little lost.
The photographer’s ability to be broad within his practice means his work can be appropriated commercially and editorially with work featured in Vice, VSCO and Men’s Health.
