Tom Vek speaks about the brilliant connection between art and music

This month we are going to be studying the much-recognised connection between art and music. To kick things off we have designer and musician Tom Vek to make a speech of sorts about this very connection, and who better to do so than someone so involved in both fields. Lately Tom has been working on Sleevenote, a new free app that allows you to view artwork LP-style on your phone, which is well worth a look once you’ve read this fantastic piece of writing on the beautiful relationship between art and music.

Art and music, the x and y of culture (whats the z? Suggestions welcome). The two dimensions perfectly compatible, never stepping on each others’ feet. The simplistic cover art that makes the difficult album seem understandable, the soundtrack in a film that allows the camera to linger on the shot for an otherwise unnatural amount of time. They are partners in crime, responsible for some of the most potent cultural experiences; Warhol’s most populist product, a rap album’s viral launch.

Sound and vision across all millennia, the beating of the ornate drum, the weird feelings, the unlimited power and value. The full package, the profound experience. One reminds us of the other less exclusively than the fraudulent synesthesiac may believe. They inspire each other, they exist with a hole to be filled by the other, they evoke each other.

As a kid I assumed all the artwork on album sleeves was by the hand of the artist and that inspired me to learn graphic design. I later found out it could be a collaboration between different people which only made it more interesting, that different artists could bond their skills so effectively and create this larger-than-the-sum-of-its-parts entity. You wanted to be in that gang, with your special skill. I’m a brat, so I like having a go at everything, and it often takes me longer as a result. Maybe people assume there are more people involved, but I don’t mind, I kinda like that.

It’s our responsibility as the generation carrying culture into the digital age that we allow these powerful collaborations to flourish. I’m very proud to be offering up this foreword on It’s Nice That’s month-long celebration of art and music. Enjoy.
