Tortie Hoare

Date
13 December 2011

I visited a tannery in Morocco a few years ago and saw animal hides laid out baking in the sun. I remember the smell was thick and hung in the air, and that scene came back to me when I came across Tortie Hoare’s furniture. She has harnessed traditional techniques for boiling and manipulating leather into striking, contemporary pieces. The stools and chairs remind me of gymkhanas or horse saddles complete with spindly equestrian legs. Really interesting stuff, plus, what an incredible name!
