UNIQLO's new Kabuki range takes inspiration from Japanese theatre

Date

If a theatrical tradition can last for over four centuries you can assume it’s pretty damn entertaining, and Japan’s Kabuki culture has done just that. It’s one of the country’s traditional performing arts, combining music, dance, elaborate costumes and striking face paint to riotous effect, with extremely dramatic results.

So it seems fitting that UNIQLO’s UT collection has drawn inspiration from Kabuki culture for their new range, partnering with Shochiku, Japan’s foremost Kabuki film and theatre company, to release a limited edition range of garments and accessories. “Shochiku Kabuki and UNIQLO both uphold the artistic ideals of truth, excellence and beauty,” they say. “In their own distinct ways they offer new cultural ideas from Japan and share them with the world.”

Their creative director Nigo has overseen the production of bold prints, vibrant patterns and graphics that mimic Kabuki’s stylised face painting techniques all combine into a collection that feels modern despite its traditional roots. And the trend-setters among you will be pleased to know that Kabuki means avant-garde in Japanese.
