Semi-naked sunbathers – come roll around in the Weekender

Date
17 April 2015

If you thought that marginally overweight bloke in swimming trunks snoozing on the beach was at the top of the Weekender for entirely arbitrary reasons this week then you thought WRONG, my friend! In fact he is the star of one of the two covers shot by Tadao Cern for the new issue of Printed Pages, which is now available for pre-order, with the first 500 orders also receiving an exclusive print from designer Alan Fletcher’s archive. That is correct. What are you waiting for? Onwards, to the Weekender!

Very Man

– He’s small, he’s floppy, he’s entirely malleable and he’ll sap all of the minutes out of your afternoon with a short series of clicks. Introducing Very Man, the best website we’ve been on in at least three days. Maybe four.

– For one week only we staged an all-female takeover of the Studio Audience podcast to talk Secret 7"s, the highs and lows of Record Store Day, and bring you your weekly round-up of art and design news. Studio Audettes, anybody? No?

Wakako Kishimoto’s Bookshelf: The National Geographic

– This week’s very special Bookshelf saw Wakako Kishimoto, one half of British design duo Eley Kishimoto, share some of her most prized books with us, including a half-underlined copy of an old Japanese/English dictionary and a beautiful old issue of The National Geographic among others.

– On the project front, this week’s winner comes from Pentagram in the form of their Give an X campaign which encourages potential voters to play their part in forming the UK’s future in the upcoming general election on 7 May.

It’s with a deep, trembling sadness that we announce the final week of our month-long Art + Music feature, and with a sly raise of the eyebrow that we counter with what might have been the best week of features so far. In the past five days we’ve given you a conversation between electro wizard Todd Terje and the two animators responsible for his bonkers new music video, an interview with none other than Paul Simonon of The Clash about his passion for painting, and a chat with Swedish folk duo First Aid Kit about commissioning illustrators to create their tour posters.

The Flaming Lips: At War With The Mystics

We also spoke to designer George Salisbury about spending 25 years with The Flaming Lips, admired some psychedelic album artwork by Robert Beatty, and editor-in-chief Rob Alderson had a good moan about the frankly wearying state of festival posters.

Phew! You can peruse the full archive in all of its splendour here.

Google Doppelgänger

Maisie Skidmore

This week’s dollop of fun comes courtesy of INT Works art director Rob Peart, who sent around this site earlier this week. It’s simple, as are all the best ones – you take a photo of yourself, Google image search it, share it for the world to see and then you spend an inordinate amount of time marvelling at other people’s pairings. Because Google image search opens up a myriad of possibilities, and this makes the most of at least a few of them.

Sometimes I blow my own trumpet in a loud, brassy self-centred fanfare. This is one of those times. In my work as one quarter of DJ/VJ collective Center Parcs Fun Time Gang, sometimes we put on parties, and sometimes they’re themed around the dystopian classic that is Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome. Last Friday was one of those times, and we made a very special promo video for the bash, Center Parcs: Beyond Fun Time Dome, which is hands down the best thing that’s been on the internet in the past seven days (excluding It’s Nice That content, natch! Don’t fire me!) . Probably. Watch with headphones.

My friend and fellow music lover Ali Palin put this, beta.radiooooo.com, on Facebook today, it’s a website that allows you to listen to the radio all over the world BUT you also get to choose the year, what kind of music you’re after and the tempo. My personal favourite is “Weird Russian in the 1970s” but someone just told me that “Fast Mexican 1990s” is also worth checking out.

James Cartwright

This week I found out there was a surfing tag on Freunde von Freunden and then wasted a hell of a lot of time feeling VERY envious about lives spent in the ocean. Don’t read any of these if you have itchy feet. It may be the final straw!
