With one of the strangest titles ever, Royal College graduate Ben Wheele’s solo show Antiquity Bonk follows through with an exhibition of saccharine ceramics with grotesque features and cartoon-like appendages. Flat works mimic the objects in a happy luridness, carefully composed and crafted; “so rococo” says the artist. Now showing at the Sunday Painter gallery in south east London, the blurb for the work reads like a troubled self-deprecating dear diary, of the disease infecting his pieces and explaining how a “disgusting ‘museum catalogue’” befriends him and “slops some images all over my eyes.”
