What's On: George Shaw: The Sly and Unseen Day

Date
24 May 2011

Opening this week at the South London Gallery is a solo exhibition by Turner Prize nominee George Shaw, with 18 paintings from 15 years of biographical painted studies of Coventry, his childhood home. Each one involves an uncanny everyday scene, contemporary and typically English, that leaves a peculiar familiarity – like you’ve forgotten these places but you remember how you felt when you were there. Shaw is gifted with “making something out of nothing, as beauty is found in the mundane,” and with this skill The Sly and Unseen Day feeds our collective emotional curiosity for nostalgia.
