What's On: Joel Sternfeld

Date
6 January 2012

First Pictures is just that, the start of Joel Sternfeld’s defining chromatic ouvre which is opening today in New York’s Luhring Ausutine gallery. In the four decades since he began, these early images are the unfettered originals that laid foundations for his artistic strategies to build “narrative, elements of humour and irony, a politicised view of America, as well as a concern for community, social conditions, and the environment.” The artworks are also highly conceptual in their formal approach to societal and artistic limitations that defined colour photography in that era. Showing until February 6.
