What's On: Kings of Kumasi: New Painting from the Asante Capital

Date
10 May 2011

Profound and brilliant paintings from three Ghanian artists, Akwesi Addai, Isaac Otchere Azey and the intense work of Almighty God, make up the latest group exhibition at the Jack Bell Gallery. Kings of Kumasi: New Painting from the Asante Capital applies the visual lexicon of the street painting scene prevalent in the region, using Christian and Juju iconography, graffiti and calligraphic compositions that are vivid and unique to each artist. The effect, the gallery informs us, recalls Basquiat and Haring’s downtown New York scene in the 80s.
