There’s something surprisingly human about Renee So’s work. Currently perched in front of a series of the artist’s knitted portraits at the Kate MacGarry Gallery, So’s sculptures aren’t just works on plinths but friends together in a room, each of them individual but all part of the same clan – dark grey or gold in colour, and bulbous. Pointing as much to Hellenic antiquity as the German Bellarmine stoneware from which the series takes its name, So’s sculptures are filled with composite references and ideas, and are so very, very friendly.
