Bookshelf: Will Sanders' bookshelf is as weird and as wonderful as his photography!

Animals, people, buildings – all things we see pretty much every day. But through the lens of Will Sanders these things become something much funnier, much weirder, much brighter — surely the mark of a great photographer? Expecting lots of photography books from his bookshelf? You’d be wrong. Cue kids books, novels, and a healthy dose of short stories – could this be the nicest photo of a bookshelf ever sent in? I’m willing to place my bets. Please welcome, Will Sanders…

Richard Brautigan – Revenge of the Lawn

This is a book of about 70 short stories by Brautigan that really show what an amazing writer he was. Some of them aren’t even a whole page but they stay with you forever. Brautigan had an amazingly fluid imagination, there is one story called A High Building in Singapore and it basically concerns something he overheard whilst walking down a street. He took a fleeting moment and turned it into something permanent and that for me is what photography is about, paying attention and catching the moments your given.

Paul Bowles – Their Heads are Green

Another book of short stories although I have to be honest and admit I’ve only read the piece I’m going to mention! It’s a piece called Baptism of Solitude, and it describes the sensation experienced by people when they first find themselves alone in the Sahara – you almost feel the silence as you read it! I can also recommend Let it Come Down by the same author — an amazing novel.

David Eagleman - Sum

This is another book of short stories! It looks like that’s all I read but If you’d have asked me before I started writing this list I’d have actually said I’m not even that fond of short stories. Anyway, this book contains 40 very different imaginings of the afterlife and is incredibly well written. I can’t really explain why but I’ve had this book for about three years or so and I’ve carried in around in my bag the whole time – It’s great to dip in and out of. I’m one of those non-religious people that likes to believe there must something, and this book is great for that.

Neil Gailman – The Graveyard Book

A fantastic novel about a young boy called Nobody who is brought up in a graveyard by ghosts and a vampire .

Steve Tolz – A Franction of the Whole

I had this book a while before reading it and when I started in completely blew me away! It’s a fantastic story of a life, and also lives. I can’t recommend it enough but I also wouldn’t want to describe it too much as I wouldn’t want to ruin it. You know when you recommend  books to people and they say “It was ok but the way you went on about it, I was expecting better”, well everyone I’ve got to read this loves it as much as me!
