ECAL's Yevgen Anfalov has a way with merging design history and contemporary aesthetics in graphics

Another ECAL student, another rather lovely portfolio; this time from Hannover-born designer Yevgeniy Anfalov. With a focus on innovative typographic projects, his projects look to historical design and cultural precedents to create work that feels considered and contemporary. Taking a fairly meta approach, one recent project is an analogue archive of Yevgeniy’s own online platform Ante Meridiem. The site is a music and visual research platform, which started off as a collection of visual culture reference points including “record covers, vintage books, magazines and ephemera.”

Yevgeniy explains: “As both visual and music worlds always went hand by hand for me, it was always a dream for me to unite them into an archive under one roof, which exists online as well as offline.”

The designer has also created the Seraphim typeface, which reinterprets a parametric rounded sans-serif type used for 1974 German exhibition catalogue Naivität der Maschine. “While keeping the roughness and unusual proportions of the capital letters of the original, the typeface went through changes in favour of both the readability and the ability to be a display typeface,” says Yevgeniy.
